Health Literacy Activities and Presentations

 

 

Alcohol Prevention Education

The DWEyes program presents simulated activities demonstrating the dangerous effects of drinking and driving. DWEyes is a 50-minute presentation that emphasizes the dangers of drinking and driving. The program uses special goggles to simulate vision impairment in a drunk person. Participants attempt to walk a straight line and keep a virtual car on the road. Real life consequences are discussed!

 

Children's Dental Health Education

The Tooth Fairy program teaches 4-6 year old children the importance of dental hygiene, brushing, and nutrition for teeth when the tooth fairy visits the classroom. The program uses a recognizable character, the Tooth Fairy, to teach basic dental health concepts. In costume, complete with wings, wand, and tiara, the Tooth Fairy teaches how teeth are constructed, why children need teeth, proper brushing technique, and which snacks are healthy or not healthy for teeth. The Tooth Fairy visits daycare centers, Head Start programs, and elementary schools. Sites are selected throughout the Brazos AHEC service region and surrounding areas with a priority given to populations traditionally identified as under- privileged and/or medically underserved.

Geriatric Sensitivity Education

The Geriatric Sensitivity program is designed to improve attitudes toward the elderly through hands-on simulation activities. This program identifies myths of aging, discusses symptoms of normal aging versus inactivity and disease, and describes how it feels to experience losses and challenges that might occur as one ages.

 

Senior Fitness Education

The Senior Fitness program teaches individuals ages 60+ how exercise and fitness can improve their health and prevent diseases related to physical inactivity. During this program, participants will learn how to identify diseases related to a sedentary lifestyle, determine their range of motion and exercise limits before beginning physical activity, and how to perform activities specifically designed for seniors.

 

Smoking Cessation Education

The Quit and Stay Quit program will assist individuals in choosing a method to quit, developing a plan to quit, and recognizing the benefits of quitting smoking. Presentations range from one hour to all-day and can be made suitable to meet the needs of your organization.   

       

Teen Pregnancy Prevention Education

The Baby Think It Over program uses life-like baby simulators in a school-based program to teach responsibilities and realities of parenting. The program includes loan of up to 13 babies, a control unit (used to monitor how baby was cared for), IDs, program manual for instructor, and accessories needed to care for baby. Teens experience the constant care a baby needs, loss of sleep and free time, daily physical burden of baby's supplies, and stigma attached to teen parents.

 

Tobacco Prevention Education

The STOMP program emphasizes healthy decisions, effects of tobacco use, handling peer pressure, and legal consequences of underage use. This 50-minute presentation promotions health decision-making while emphasizing the dangers of tobacco use. The program, created by hospital-based health educators, is suitable for grades three through twelve.
