Health Careers 101

This presentation highlights a variety of non-traditional and traditional careers in healthcare and gives students information regarding education and training pathways, and salary outlook. Interactive, hands-on activities provide an in-depth look at various health careers.

Pharmacy

What does a pharmacist do? Not just a pill counter. Through games and simulations, students are introduced to the world of pharmaceutical careers. Activities include patient interaction simulations, compounding techniques, and pill sorting.

 

Dentistry

Dentistry is the 8th most respected career in the country. While learning about good oral hygiene, students will experience the daily activities of dentists, dental hygienists, dental lab techs, and dental assistants. Students will look at teeth from various species to discuss form and function.

 

Public Health

"Bio-terror, Anthrax, West Nile Virus"-- these words are now used every day. Public health officials address and find solutions to these problems. Environmental health specialist, health educator, and epidemiologist are all careers that will be explored during this session.

 

Geriatric Sensitivity

This presentation breaks down stereotypes and misinformed ideas about the elderly, and stresses the growing need for health care workers in geriatrics. The session allows participants to experience common physical and emotional changes that happen to most as they age including: vision loss, hearing and speech impairment, arthritis and physical immobility, loss of job, income, home, family, and independence. Includes geriatric assessment techniques for future and current health care workers and poly-pharmacy activity.

 

Employability Skills

Presentations cover attitudes needed to get and keep a job, resume and application instruction, teamwork skills, communication skills, basic computer skills, job interest inventory, and educational opportunities for advancement.

 

Nursing

In order to address the critical nursing shortage this program presents nursing career options from the ground up. Students will learn about nursing from CNA to PhD and everything in between! Information on dozens of specialties will be available.

 

College Preparation/Financial Aid

This presentation is designed to provide students with practical advice and information related to high education. It covers the benefits of attending college, how to choose a school, and resources for paying for college. It includes what types of financial aid are available, as well as where to look for aid. Tips and recommendations for scholarship applications are also included.

 

AKA Science

(All Kids Are Scientists)- An after-school interactive science program for underserved children. Students grades K-6 and teachers participate in inquiry-based learning of fundamental science principles in a non-traditional learning environment.

 

Bridging II TAKS

This program allows students to participate in hands-on learning experiences designed to foster student success on TAKS. The use of tools to explore the properties of matter is vertically aligned for students in 2nd grade and modeled through inquiry.
