Eat
Healthy This Summer
With the
kids at home for the summer, sometimes it’s easier just to grab fast food on the
go. Before you hit the
drive-through window again, think twice.
The growing numbers of obese children are widespread across the nation.
Don’t let your child become another statistic.
Here are some suggestions of items you can grab for your child that are
healthier than fast food hamburgers and fries:
1.
Mini
Pizza: Toast an English muffin, drizzle with pizza sauce and sprinkle with
low-fat mozzarella cheese.
2.
3.
Spread
mustard on a flour tortilla. Top
with a slice of turkey or ham, low-fat cheese and lettuce.
Then roll it up.
4.
Parfait:
Layer vanilla yogurt and mandarin oranges or blueberries in a tall glass.
Top with a sprinkle of granola.
5.
Mix
together ready-to-eat cereal, dried fruit and nuts in a sandwich bag for an
on-the-go snack.
6.
Top
low-fat vanilla yogurt with crunchy granola and sprinkle with blueberries.
7.
Make
snack kabobs. Put cubes of low-fat
cheese and grapes on pretzel sticks.
8.
Spread
peanut butter on apple slices.
9.
Blend
low-fat milk, frozen strawberries and a banana for thirty seconds for a
delicious smoothie.
10.
Sprinkle grated Monterey Jack cheese over a corn tortilla; fold in half and
microwave for twenty seconds. Top
with salsa.
11. Mix
peanut butter and cornflakes together into a bowl.
Shape into balls and roll in crushed graham crackers.
12.
Fill a
waffle cone with diced fruit and top with low-fat vanilla frozen yogurt.

So
you’re on vacation (lucky you!) and fast food is all there is, right?
That’s ok. Just choose the
healthier options. Choose a chicken
wrap instead of a hamburger. Pick
the Junior sizes. Aim for the
grilled options. Make salads a
possibility. All these items are
available at most fast food restaurants.
Just because it is summer does not mean you can’t eat healthy!
